Tribadometry n. (tri-ba-DOM-uh-tree)

Tribadometry 4.6: Shared Parabolic Focus 24 x 24 inches

Tribadometry is a catalog of lesbian sexual positions depicted through two pairs of entwined legs, overlaid with mathematical text and diagrams. Playfully, some of the math is nonsense, some comes from solving made up problems, and some comes from definitions and theorems inspired by the compositions. The word tribade has ancient origins as a sapphic descriptor meaning “to rub”. For this project, tribadism is distilled down to its fundamental properties: a queer sex act, involving a vulva being rubbed on another person’s body, making it gender inclusive and exclusively queer.

4.1: Saddle Point

4.2: Center of Balance

4.3: Random Number Generator

4.4: Hyperbolic Geometry

Tribadometry 3.0 is a nine piece polyptych of 10x 10 inch canvases, collaged with 2 pairs of legs and an open triangle. The nine points of each triangle’s nine-point circle are marked and numbered.

The first chapter of my envisioned art/math book, Tribadometry vol. 1, includes full color photographs of all collages in Batch 1.0, the origin story of this project, an explanation of the foundation of trigonometry, queer-themed word problems, and more!
